This works great for some people, but if you have a gaba/glutamate imbalance you might want to consider a different form of magnesium. I'm awarding 3 stars because I think the main issue here is with my own body/brain chemistry. But I suspect that the malate form, much like the glycinate form, can be very unpleasant for people who have a hard time converting glutamate (excitatory neurotransmitter) to GABA (inhibitory/relaxing). A little research indicates that malate/malic acid is an inhibitor of glutamate decarboxylase, the enzyme that catalyzes the decarboxylation of glutamate to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Which basically suggests that the malic acid component of this results in excess glutamate, and excess glutamate is a recipe for anxiety, panic attacks, all that. Doesn't sound like much fun, does it? It's not. Like I said, this side effect isn't likely to occur in people not predisposed to anxiety. But if you do suffer from any form of anxiety disorder, I would suggest staying away. In my experience the glycinate, taurate, and now malate forms all have this unwanted effect. Other forms seem more benign. I would also point out that there are NO RETURNS OR REFUNDS from NOW, it appears. Annoying, but I should have done the research before ordering. I find NOW's mag citrate helpful but was concerned about possible histamine issues with citric acid, leaving me $18 poorer. So it goes. Back to the citrate, at least for now.

I was told by my doctor to try this form of magnesium. It’s great. I haven’t had any of the side effects that comes from other forms.
