Magnesium is one of the most commonly under-consumed minerals, and one of the most confusing to shop for — because it comes in more than a dozen chemical forms, each with different absorption rates and best-use cases.

Why Form Matters

Not all magnesium is created equal. The mineral has to be bonded to another compound (a "chelate") to be absorbed and used by the body, and that compound significantly affects how well-tolerated and bioavailable the supplement is.

Common Forms, Compared

  • Magnesium Glycinate — bonded to the amino acid glycine, known for being gentle on the stomach and well-absorbed. Often chosen for general supplementation and relaxation support.
  • Magnesium Malate — bonded to malic acid, sometimes associated with energy and muscle-related support.
  • Magnesium L-Threonate — a patented form studied specifically for its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier, often marketed for cognitive and sleep-related use.
  • Magnesium Oxide — inexpensive and common, but has notably lower absorption and is more likely to cause digestive upset.
  • Magnesium Citrate — well-absorbed but can have a laxative effect at higher doses.

How to Choose

  • General wellness / relaxation: Magnesium Glycinate is a common starting point due to its gentle tolerability.
  • Cognitive/sleep-focused use: Magnesium L-Threonate is the most-studied form for this specific purpose.
  • Multi-form blends: Some products combine several forms to cover multiple benefits in one capsule.

A Practical Tip

If a magnesium supplement causes stomach upset, it's often the form — not the mineral itself — that's the issue. Switching from an oxide or citrate form to a glycinate form frequently resolves this.
